چکیده

The recognition of methionine as an important building stone of the protein molecule is one of the most significant advances in our knowledge of the chemistry of the biologically important sulfur compounds (1). Methionine has been shown to function similarly to cystine both for purposes of growth in rats fed a diet inadequate in its cystine content (2) and for the detoxication of monobromobensene (3). Thus a close relationship, in function, at least, between these two amino acids of the protein molecule may be assumed. The recent studies of Brand and associates, which are concerned with the fate of methionine, cystine and cysteine (4), and homocystine and homocysteine (5) in the cystinuric individual, have furnished still further evidence of the interrelationship of the various sulfur-containing amino acids and have indicated a possible origin of the cystine excreted in this perplexing error of metabolism. It has been difficult to correlate the failure of cystine, when fed to a cystinuric patient, to increase the urinary cystine and its ready oxidation to and excretion as sulfate with the increased elimination of urinary cystine which has been observed repeatedly to occur when a diet high in its content of protein (and presumably cystine) has been fed (6). The Metabolism of Sulfur Xxv. Dietary Methionine as a Factor Related to the Growth and Composition of the Hair of the Young White Rat by E. Virginia Heard and Howard

The relation of the cystine of the diet to the growth and composition of the hair of young white rats has been established (l-3). In the absence of adequate amounts of dietary cystine, optimal growth of the hair was not observed and the cystine and sulfur contents of the hair were lower than those of rats maintained on diets supplying ample amounts of cystine. The ingestion of cystine in quanti...

The urinary sulfur partition in normal and cystinuric dogs fed labeled methionine.

In 1935 Brand and coworkers (1) discovered a cystinuric Irish terrier. Since that time several other cystinuric dogs, including two Scotch terriers (2), have been either discovered or bred from the original stock. It might have been supposed that with this stimulus the problem of cystinuria would have been clarified. Such is apparently not the case. Brand and coworkers (3) have investigated var...

Medical Nutrition Therapy for Pediatric Kidney Stone Prevention, Part 3: Cystinuria.

Audience: Pediatrics; Nephrology Outpatient Clinic CYSTINURIA IS AN inherited, genetic condition that causes hyper-excretion of cystine and other dibasic amino acids (lysine, arginine, and ornithine) in the urine due to impaired transport in the proximal renal tubules. The low solubility of cystine leads to precipitation and the formation of renal stones. While rare, this condition accounts for...

Comparative species utilization and toxicity of sulfur amino acids.

Animal studies have shown that several methionine (Met) and cysteine (Cys) analogs or precursors have L-Met- and L-Cys-sparing activity. Relative oral bioavailability (RBV) values, with the L-isomer of Met and Cys set at 100% (isosulfurous basis), are near 100% for D-Met for animals but only about 30% for humans. Both the OH and keto analogs of Met have high RBV-sparing values, as does N-acetyl...
